Bushmills sold

A week ago Diageo, the world's biggest spirit producer, completed the purchase of the Irish whiskey brand Bushmills from Pernod Ricard for almost 300m euro. Pernod Ricard sold the brand as a tactical deal in order to keep Diageo far away from the Allied Domecq takeover. Old Bushmills Distillery is the oldest licensed distillery in the world where the renowned Bushmills whiskey has been distilled legally since 1608 when King James I granted its license. Bushmills will join two other Irish brands, Guinness and Bailey's, in the Diageo portfolio giving an important presence for the company in the growing category of Irish whiskey.

Egy héttel ezelőtt a Diageo, a világ legnagyobb szeszipari vállalata, majdnem 300millió euróért megvásárolta a Bushmills ír whiskey márkát a Pernod Ricard francia szeszipari vállalattól. A Pernod Ricard taktikai céllal adta el a Bushmillst, ezzel is távol tartva egyik legnagyobb riválisát az Allied Domecq felvásárlásától. Az Old Bushmills Distillery a világ egyik legrégebben regisztrált lepárló üzeme, amely a lepárlás jogát még I. Jakab királytól kapta 1608-ban. A Bushmills így két másik világhíres ír italmárka, a Guinness és a Bailey's mellé kerül a Diageo portfóliójába, hozzásegítve ezzel a vállalatot az egyre növekvő ír whiskey piacon való megjelenéshez.

Bottle of Galway whiskey for 100k euro

Quick news, although a week old: A bottle of Irish malt whiskey from the Nuns' Island Distillery (closed in 1913) has just recently turned up in a specialist shop in England and is expected to reach 100k euro when sold. According to Mr. Kenneth Thomas, the owner of the specialist shop, this bottle of whiskey is believed to be one of the rarest bottles of malt whiskey in the world - dating probably from the late 1800s. The bottle was brought into the shop in a carrier bag by a customer 3 years ago and it had an interesting life before. It's worth to read more about the story either on Galway Advertiser, or on Mr. Thomas's website >>

SWA issues Whisky Code of Practice

The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) has issued new industry rules on the marketing and promotion of Scotch Whisky in the UK. Covering all commercial communications, including advertising, promotional materials, sponsorship, websites, and so on, The SWA Code of Practice for the responsible marketing and promotion of Scotch Whisky will directly apply to all brand activities in the UK. The code also has international reach, setting out best practice for Scotch Whisky producers in export markets, where stricter national codes do not exist. Backed by an Independent Complaints Panel, and with the power to impose sanctions on distillers if the rules are breached, the code represents the toughest self-regulation by a specific alcoholic drinks sector anywhere in the world. A Skót Whisky Szövetség kiadta új iparági marketing és promóciós irányelveit Nagy-Britanniában. Az ún. "SWA Code of Practice" vonatkozik mindenfajta kereskedelmi kommunikációra, reklámra, szponzorációra, internetoldalakra, stb és minden skót whisky márka minden tevékenységére Nagy-Britanniában.

Future's always uncertain

"Future is uncertain for Allied Domecq whisky brands" wrote The Whisky Magazine a month ago. Well, we don't know. Actually, no one knows. But all the whisky fans hope for the brightest future for the former AD brands and distilleries. I'm sure Pernod Ricard will take good care of them. As they did it with Irish Distillers, and the Seagram portfolio. Although, there are always bad examples. Since LVMH's takeover of Glenmorangie there have been two waves of redundancies with more expected.

Bruichladdich in good hands

Since Allied Domecq was sold, I feel somehow worried about its brand portfolio. Especially, about the Single Malt whiskies. Are they in good hands now? Or their days are numbered? We shall see. But there are some examples, which show how multinational spirit companies are thinking about Single Malt distilleries. For example, Bruichladdich. The distillery was built in 1881 by the Harvey family. At that time it was a state-of-the-art distillery, and some of the original equipments are still in use. Like other distilleries, Bruichladdich also went through some ownership changes in the past couple of decades. Jim Beam Brands (the spirit division of Fortune Brands) was the last multinational owner, which left the distillery closed and idle. They simply didn't want to invest in reconstruction, and so were likely to leave the equipments moulder until those were broken up for scrap. Fortunately, the very passionate Mark Reynier succeeded to buy Bruichladdich after 8 years (!) of negotiations. So Jim Beam Brands could collect its 11.5 million euro for doing nothing for long years. After hard work of re-building the distillery, it was re-opened in May, 2001. Now it is in good shape and under control, saved for the future, and producing fine Islay whiskies for generations, again. But what Jim Beam Brands did with the money? Well, they bought out Laphroaig, the most popular Islay whisky, from the former Allied Domecq portfolio. Now, we can just hope that the company's approach to Single Malt distilleries changed in the past couple of years. We hope that buying Laphroaig is not about milking the brand, but also re-invest behind.

Mióta az Allied Domecq eladásra került, kicsit aggódom a márka-portfóliójáért. Különösen a single malt whiskykért. A lepárlót 1881-ben építette a Harvey család. Akkoriban a legmodernebbnek számított, néhány berendezése a mai napig üzemel.
