A new whisky giant is born

Yesterday, a new whisky giant was born. This should be no news for those who follow not only the life of the whisky brands, but the life of their mother-company, too. Allied Domecq, the former owner of the Scottish Allied Distillers, the whisky brands like Ballantine's, Teacher's, Laphroaig, Glendronach, Scapa, Tormore, other distilleries like Imperial, Miltonduff, Ardmore, Glenburgie, as well as the European distributor of Tullamore Dew Irish whiskey, and the owner of Canadian Club whisky, and Maker's Mark the best selling small-batch Kentucky bourbon in the US, was sold. One of the proud buyer is the French spirit giant Pernod Ricard, who already had in his portfolio The Glenlivet, Chivas Regal, Aberlour, Jameson, Bushmills, other Scottish distilleries and the majority of the Irish whiskey industry. So, the deal's done. From July the 27th, the New Pernod Ricard started to be built with integration most of the Allied Domecq brands and businesses into its structure and organisation. The company will have quite a significant power both in spirit industry in general, but in the whisky category, too. Although Teacher's, Laphroaig, Canadian Club and Maker's Mark leave the portfolio and join Pernod Ricard's co-investor of the deal, Fortune Brands (owner of Jim Beam Brands), and Bushmills will soon land in DIAGEO, but the New Pernod Ricard will still have these nice whisky brands at hand: Ballantine's, Chivas Regal, Royal Salute, The Glenlivet, Aberlour, Glendronach, Scapa, Glenburgie, Tormore, Ardmore, Jameson, and probably many others which I don't even know. Not to mention all the other great spirit brands in the portfolio.

Ezen új vállalat igen erős lesz nemcsak a szesz piacon általában, hanem a whisky világpiacon is. Jóllehet a Teacher's, a Laphroaig, a Canadian Club és a Maker's Mark a Fortune Brands (a Jim Beam Brands tulajdonosa) mint a Pernod Ricard vevő- és befektetőtársa márkaportfóliójába kerül, a Bushmills pedig a DIAGEO-nál landol, mégis, az Új Pernod Ricard-nak nagyon tetszettős whisky választéka lesz: Ballantine's, Chivas Regal, Royal Salute, The Glenlivet, Aberlour, Glendronach, Scapa, Glenburgie, Tormore, Ardmore, Jameson és valószínűleg még jónéhány további whisky, amiről nem is tudok. A többi remek italról nem is beszélve.

Celebrating the Birthday of John Walker

Today we shall raise our glasses to John Walker, the man who created Johnnie Walker. He was born on July the 25th, 1805. His story started in Kilmarnock, when his father, Alexander Walker, died and he succeeded him in running the family business. Begining of the 19th century blending was still "illegal", but John Walker created his first blend of Scottish grain and malt whisky. After 1830, when the Coffey still was invented, lighter and more consistent whiskies were produced, and John Walker began these grain whiskies, and a dynasty was born. In 1857 John Walker died. But after the restrictions on blending was lifted, his son, named also Alexander, copyrighted a design for "Walker's Old Highland Whisky", in a blend we now know as Johnnie Walker Black Label. Today, more than 10 million cases of Johnnie Walker are sold every year in more than 200 countries around world - so, four bottles consumed every single second. Nice story and nice achievement, huh? I think so. On the heritage of John Walker, was formed the biggest spirit company, DIAGEO, which now also owns many of great Single Malt Scotch whiskies: Cardhu, Cragganmore, Dalwhinnie, Talisker, Oban, Clynelish, Lagavulin, and so on. For celebrating the 200th anniversary of the birth of John Walker, the company come out with two specialties. A 2,000 USD special edition Cask Strength Blue Label with a limited edition book. And a '1805' blend of now silent stills in a 200 bottles VIP edition with a replica of Alexander Walker's blending book.

1857-ben John Walker meghalt. Pár évvel később törvényben legalizálták a whisky-blendinget, és John fia, Alexander Walker "Walker's Old Highland Whisky" néven bejegyezhette a ma Johnnie Walker Black Label néven ismert blended Scotch whiskyjét. Ma több mint 10 millió karton Johnnie Walkert adnak el évente a világ 200 országában - vagyis 4 üveggel minden másodpercben. Szép történet, és szép siker, nem? John Walker öröksége az alapja napjaink legnagyobb szeszipari vállalat,a DIAGEO megalapításának, amely olyan remek single malt whiskyket is portfóliójában tudhat mint a Cardhu, Cragganmore, Dalwhinnie, Talisker, Oban, Clynelish, Lagavulin, és sok más. A 200 éves születésnap megünneplésére a vállalat két különlegességel is előrukkol. Egy 2,000 dolláros "special edition Cask Strength" Blue Label Johnnie Walkerrel, amelyhez jár egy korlátozott számban kiadott könyvecske is. Valamint egy '1805' néven futó ma már nem működő lepárlók whiskyjeiből kevert különleges blend 200 üveges VIP kiadása, amihez extra ajándékként Alexander Walker eredeti blending feljegyzéseinek re-print kiadását adják.

Whisky Bible 2005

Well, I didn't post anything for a long time. Sorry. The company I work for is merging with another one, so we have a lot to do for the time being. Anyway, I was in London Thursday-Friday (not to mention the terror attacks), so I could finally buy Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2005. It's great and it's necessary for any whisky connoisseur. I studied it a little bit and just recognized that one of my favourite blended Scotch got the best rating among Scottish Blends. The Ballantine's 17 Year Old is rated for 96 on a scale of 100, and described as a blend which gives masterclass performance. "The point about this whisky is that you feel never quite get to the bottom layer: labyrinthine liquid genius." (Jim Murray). I know much about how it is "hand-crafted", as I checked and corrected the Hungarian translation of the book about the story of Ballantine's 17 YO. The other 96-rated blended Scotch is William Grant's 21 Year Old, which is described by Jim Murray as "a blend of a quality rarely achieved". But still, I go for the Ballantine's 17YO.

A másik 96 pontra értékelt blended Scotch whisky a 21 éves William Grant's , amelyről Jim Murray azt írja "ritkán sikerül ilyen kíváló minőségű blend". Én mégis a Ballantine's 17 YO-ra szavazok.

Transparent Scotch - well, they're kidding

Well, I didn't know anything about that see-through J&B -6 brand, so I tried to get some answers for my question: "Why the J&B -6 is a see through whisky? Is it not aged in oak barrels?" J&B has a website which answers any questions you ask. I hoped its not only a marketing bullshit, but it seems it is. For my question, I've got back this answers:
"Hi David,
Thank you for your email and I set out some facts below.
· Scotch Whisky is defined in UK law by the Scotch Whisky Act 1988.
· This means the Whisky must be a product of Scotland made from water and malted barley, matured in Scotland in oak casks for no less than 3 years, which retain the colour, aroma and taste derived from the raw materials used. It must be no less than 40% ABV and no substance other than water and spirit caramel can been added
· J&B -6°C blended Scotch Whisky fully complies with the definition and has been developed in close consultation with the Scotch Whisky Association
What is J&B -6°C?
· J&B -6°C is a new blended Scotch Whisky from Justerini and Brooks (J&B). The J&B brand has a heritage that dates back to 1749, and J&B RARE blended Scotch Whisky was first produced in Scotland in 1910. Now, Justerini & Brooks has used its expertise, and its wide range of maturing grain and malt Whiskies, to blend J&B -6°C, a smooth and subtle tasting Scotch Whisky for a new generation of Whisky drinkers
· The specially selected grains and unusually high malt content that goes into the blend creates the subtle flavour of J&B -6°C and gives it a naturally light colour - BUT HOW IT STAYS LIGHT COLOURED?
· The unique flavour of J&B -6°C blended Scotch Whisky makes it great for mixing but it is equally good neat or over ice
Regards,
J&B"
It's all nice and possibly very true, but I still don't know how they make their whisky transparent when it is aged in oak barrels for at least three years.

Íme, a fenti választ kaptam vissza (bocs, de nincs most erőm lefordítani).

Bourbon whiskey: Basic definition

Straight Kentucky Bourbon takes its name from Bourbon county, Kentucky from where the whiskies headed down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans. Barrels shipped from the county's ports were stamped with the county's name and Bourbon and whiskey soon became synonymus. There are strict laws governing just what a Bourbon must be to be labelled as such. For example, at least 51% of the grain used in making whiskey must be corn (most distillers use 65 to 80 percent corn). Bourbon must be aged for a minimum of two years in new, white oak barrels that have been charred to darken the wood and to caramelise some of the natural sugars in the oak. It is from this wood that Bourbon takes all its colour and much of its flavour. Nothing can be added at bottling to enhance flavour, add sweetness or alter colour. Though technically Bourbon can be made anywhere, Kentucky is the only state allowed to put its name on the bottle. And as Kentucky distillers are quick to point out, Bourbon is not Bourbon unless the label says so.
