Whisk(e)y 2.0 - New version of Whiskynews

After 8 months of blogging, it was time to re-new Whiskynews. Two days of hard work on the last weekend, but finally succeeded to put together "Whisk(e)y 2.0". Some face-lift, new design - I hope you like it. Some changes also in content, like the poll, the collection of whiskyblogs, and the tag-board - and more to come. From now on, posts will also be focused more on whisky heritage, traditions, new releases and tasting notes. Slainte!

Slainte!

"Stand fast, Craigellachie!"

This week, on the occasion of my 35th birthday (old I am, huh?), I've got the nicest Single Malt in my life so far: Murray McDavid Mission III Craigellachie 1970. Distilled in the year I was born, aged in oak casks for 33 years, then bottled only 498 limited edition bottles - out of which one has landed last week in my collection. I'm still hesitating to open it, but already dug up the internet for information or tasting notes. In Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2005 it was rated for 93 points, which fact suggest to taste it ... but it is so rare and valuable for me, that I'll rather keep it unopened. Craigellachie distillery was established in 1888, made prospering by "Restless" Peter J. Mackie who created the famous White Horse Blend and who was also the owner of Lagavulin on Islay. The distillery is now owned by Bacardi. Only 2% is marketed as Single Malt, the remaining part is used in blends, mainly in Dewar's White Label. Since UDV had to sell the distillery and Bacardi took over, the only bottlings on the market are those of some independent bottlers. Like my precious one. The only question still remains: taste it or not. Maybe I'll wait until I'm 40 (or more).

Ezen a héten, 35. születésnapomra (öregszem) kaptam életem eddigi legszebb, legjobb single malt whiskyjét: Murray McDavid Mission III Craigellachie 1970. A gyártott whiskynek csak 2%-a kerül single malt whiskyként forgalomba, a többi mind blended whiskykbe kerül, nagyobbrészt a Dewar's White Lable whiskybe.

Whiskies in Car Racing

I don't know why people think whisky as an old-fashioned drink. This year whisky giants show us how they think - three of the biggest brands started to sponsor the most popular car racing series targeting racing fans. Jack Daniel's and Jim Beam invested in racing teams of the Nextel Cup Series, or NASCAR, while Johnnie Walker set up a partnership with Team McLaren Mercedes in Formula 1. The sponsorship of racing teams aimed to attract not only car racing freaks, but all the billions of viewers around the world, who follows those circus from week to week. This is now possible after lifting the ban on having spirit sponsors in NASCAR for years. Jack Daniel's driver is the experienced NASCAR driver, Dave Blaney, and the car is the No.7 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Jim Beam is the proud sponsor of both NASCAR (Nextel Cup Series) and Indy Car with Jim Beam driver Robby Gordon in Nascar and Dan Wheldon in Indy Car. Altough Johnnie Walker is "only" a co-sponsor of Team McLaren Mercedes, but still spends a lot on sponsoring the Formula 1 race cars of Kimi Raikkonen and Juan Pablo Montoya. You can however ask why's all that fuss about, or how spirits link to pro drivers, or even what about "don't drink & drive" - don't ask me. The official opinion of these brands is that pro drivers are the best celebrities to convice people of moderate drinking. Well, everyone shall decide.

A Jim Beam két versenysorozatban is indított csapatot. Robby Gordon pilótát a NASCAR-ban, illetve Dan Wheldont az Indy Car bajnokságban. Jóllehet a Johnnie Walker "csak" társ-szponzora a McLaren Mercedes csapatnak, mégis rengeteget költ a Forma 1-es Kimi Raikkonen és Juan Pablo Montoya autóinak támogatására. Persze felmerül a kérdés, hogy mire is a felhajtás, mi köze lehet az alkoholnak a profi autóversenyzőkhöz, vagy méginkább, hol marad ilyenkor a "ne vezess ittasan" szlogen - hát, fogalmam sincs. A cégek hivatalos álláspontja szerint ezen ismert autóversenyzők tudják az embereket a leghitelesebben meggyőzni a mérsékelt alkoholfogyasztás előnyeiről. Amúgy pedig mindenki gondol, amit akar.

Master Distillers create a unique vatted American whiskey

The Distilled Spirits Council of US and Historic Mount Vernon hosted a whiskey vatting and tasting event with master distillers on the grounds of the George Washington Distillery at Mount Vernon, VA, where the nation's Founding Father ran the largest whiskey distillery in the 18th century America. At the event, casks of the most famous American whiskey brands (Jack Daniel's, Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, Wild Turkey and others) were opened after they had been aging under special license at an undisclosed location on the grounds of Mount Vernon. The newly created, "married" whiskey, as a distinct "vatted" American whiskey, was then placed in new casks and returned to its undisclosed location. A limited edition of 250 bottles will be bottled and sold on September 28, when the Media Tour of American Whiskey Trail will start. The Distilled Spirits Council of US announced its tour visiting legendary Kentucky and Tennessee distilleries of the American Whiskey Trail from Sept 28 to Oct 2. Stops on the tour include Jack Daniel's, Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, Wild Turkey, Woodford Reserve, and George Dickel. The tour will kick-off at a historic and festive celebration at George Washington Distillery at Mount Vernon, on Sep 28. On that day, rum distillers from US and its territories will produce an 18th century style rum in an 18th century pot still over an open flame on the ground of the historic estate. 28. és Okt. 2. között zajlik majd. A túra fő állomásai a híres Jack Daniel's, Jim Beam, Maker's Mark, Wild Turkey, Woodford Reserve, and George Dickel whiskeyk lepárló üzemei. A túra a George Washington Distillery-ben kezdődik, ahol USA-beli és USAhoz tartozó területeken működő rum lepárlók készítenek korabeli rumot nyílt láng felett desztilláló XVIII. századi rum lepárlóval.
